Houston Auto InsuranceIn Houston where temperatures are still hot and muggy, its hard to imagine that fall is actually here. But soon, leaves will start falling and the heat will finally give away to cooler days and nights. This time of year is a perfect time to get your car ready for driving this winter. Have your car checked out by a professional before the cold weather and adverse driving conditions set in to avoid problems at the worst of times. These are the most important winter-specific features to check when fall hits:

Tires: Snow might not happen often but it is possible to experience some ice on the roadways this winter, and who knows, we might even get a little snow! Even with the mild winters of Houston, it is important to make sure your tires are in good condition. Make sure the tread in your tires is good and you do not need new tires. Also, as the temperature changes, it is important to make sure you have the correct amount of air in your tires and there are no nails or other debris in them. Before the weather turns cold, make sure your tires are in good condition.

Air Conditioner: The air conditioning system in your car actually needs to be exercised during the winter, regardless of the temperature outside. Running it for half an hour upon starting your car will warm the pipes, defrost the car and ensure that there is no corrosion from lack of use. Make sure your air conditioning system is functioning before it gets cold.

Antifreeze: Antifreeze, technically known as ethylene glycol, is necessary for decent vehicle maintenance in freezing temperatures because it stops the engine from freezing. It is also used in the windshield washer fluid to de-ice the windshield. Whereas in the summer months your radiator should be filled with a coolant, winter requires antifreeze for temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Have extra in the trunk of your car in case you accidentally run out while driving. Freezing days might not happen often in Houston, but when they do, you want to make sure things like your windshield wiper fluid does not freeze.

Battery: Battery maintenance and a backup plan are of incredible importance in cold weather. If your battery dies, you could be stuck in a cold car until help arrives. Have your battery checked out and purchase a set of jumper cables to keep on hand as well.

Brakes: Brakes are right up there with the health of your car’s battery: they will be facing any combination of water and ice that you can imagine. To stay safe, you need total brake control while driving. Have them tested and tightened if necessary.

As far as car insurance goes, you may want to give yours a systems check as well. If your car isn’t normally driven in the winter, change to a comprehensive insurance policy that will be considerably less expensive than insuring it for driving that you won’t be doing. For the car you will be driving in the winter, consider adding collision coverage and roadside assistance to your policy if they aren’t already on it. If you logically assess your needs on a seasonal basis, you can possibly save money, and, in every case, feel more secure while on the road.
