Fourth of July SafetyIt’s amazing that The Fourth of July is less than a month away. Now is the time to start planning for this celebration of our country. So, while you are preparing your pool or lake house, stocking up on meat to grill, inviting all your neighbors and friends and organizing the firework show, don’t forget to think through the safety precautions which should be in order.  It is a time of celebration; but it's also a time of potentially dangerous activities such as cooking on an outdoor grill, waterfront activity and lighting fireworks. In order to make your Fourth of July celebration a safe one, here are some safety tips.

  • Fireworks send almost 9,000 people to the emergency room each year. Don’t let yourself, or any of your guests, become a part of this number in 2013. Take the necessary precautions; only allow adults to handle fireworks, wear eye protection when lighting fireworks, do not point a firework at another persona and never tried to fix or relight a dud.
  • Keep fireworks and grills away from dry grass and overhanging foliage. Trim the bushes around the area in which you plan to operator grill and create a safe, non-flammable area for firework lighting.
  • Texas summers are hot and dry, which isn’t a completely safe situation for fireworks, grills or bonfires that are common on the Fourth of July. Pay attention to burn bans. If there is a burn ban, be sure to abide by it. If there is not a burn ban, still take precautions with fire. Keep a hose and a bucket of water nearby in the case of a loose spark. This is just an easy and fast way to stop a fire before it even gets started.
  • Make sure the person manning the grill is knowledgeable and experience with that specific grill. Also, be sure to keep your grill at least 10 feet away your house or any other structure and do not add starter fluid after coals are burning.
  • If your Fourth of July celebration will take place on one of the Texas lakes, make sure everyone onboard wears a life jacket. Texas law says that the boat must be equipped with enough life jackets for everyone on board, and any child under 13 years of age must have a life jacket on at all times while in the boat. Do not become a drowning statistic; be sure there is a life jacket within easy reach for every adult and on every child.
  • If your family goes camping for the Fourth of July each year, make sure the campfire is at least 15 feet from the tents, trees and shrubs and make sure there are no low-hanging branches over the fire. But again, make sure there is not a burn ban in effect before you light a campfire.
  • When putting out a campfire, cover all logs and ashes with water and continue pouring until doing so no longer causes a hissing noise. Then, use a shovel to move through the ashes and ensure that everything is wet and cold. Burying the fire in the dirt or sand may put the flames out but it will just keep the fire hot and active underneath and become dangerous for those walking.
  • Make sure a sober adult with both swimming and CPR skills is present for any time children are swimming.
